Five Maintenance Skills All Homeowners Should Know
There's no landlord or building superintendent to ask for help now! As a homeowner, it’s best to learn to handle these basic problems before shelling out money for professional help.
- Changing HVAC Filters - Change your HVAC filter quarterly to keep your system running smoothly and cut energy bills.
- Cutting the Water Supply - Find and tag the shut-off valve when you first move in. When the time comes, turn the handle 90 degrees to cut your water supply.
- Unclogging Drains - A chemical drain cleaner may work, but you can also use a drain snake to mechanically remove the clog.
- Resetting a Circuit Breaker - To reset a breaker, open the panel cover and find the breaker in the “off” position. Push it to “on.”
- Cleaning Gutters - When gutters aren’t cleared of debris, water can get trapped and seep into your house, costing you thousands.
